Why Serena and Venus Williams Have Plans to Retire Soon

Serena and Venus Williams were graciously captured on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar- an American monthly magazine dedicated to the lives of women and especially clothing items dedicated to women.

Tennis superstar Venus Williams took to her Instagram account and showed her fans some of the behind-the-scenes photos with her sister on their most recent cover story and photoshoot for Harper’s Bazaar.

The post showed the sisters striking the same poses and having fun with it. In one of the photos shared by Venus, the sisters had on the same kind of body-hugging and slightly off-shoulder dresses, made more appealing by the long-sleeves and semi-transparent design.

Venus wore the red design while Serena had on the black replica. Both sisters were sporting black platform slides on their feet. The photo was captioned, “Best doubles team ever!” a witty reference to the game of tennis which the sisters are famously known for.

Almost a week ago, Venus had posted the cover shot and some of the photos that were selected to appear in the magazine. Her caption for that particular post read, “Such a special honour to be on the cover of @harpersbazaarus March Legacy issue with @serenawilliams.”

In another photo, the tennis players were seen wearing black one-piece bathing suits and had their necks adorned with Cartier jewellery. They also modelled other high-end fashion ensembles along with perfectly complementing jewellery and footwear.

For the shoot with the sisters, some of the big guns in the fashion industry were pulled out. The sisters were personally styled by editor-in-chief Samira Nasr, clothing and footwear designs were made by Norma Kamali, Richard Quinn, Rick Owens, Valentino, Balmain and Gucci.

Venus 41, entered the tennis scene in 1994 and her sister Serena, 40, joined a year after in 1995. Since then, the duo has dominated the tennis scene, winning a combination of 48 Grand Slam titles.

Why Serena and Venus Williams Plan to Retire

While Venus is looking forward to the day she retires from tennis. “From such a young age, all we’ve done is work. So I think for Serena and me to explore that freedom is surreal. We’ve never been free,”- she told the magazine- Serena however says she would rather not think about it and just live each day as it comes. “That’s something I don’t think about nor do I want,” said Serena. “I don’t want to think about what I’m leaving. I just think about who I am every single day behind closed doors and behind cameras. And that’s what I focus on.”

The girls went on to talk about the healthy environment promoted by their dad, and the reason they did not grow up to abhor the game of tennis. This story of their father’s support and patience is depicted in the movie King Richard,  starring Will Smith.

“Everyone’s like, ‘Well, how do you play tennis for so long?’ It’s because we weren’t raised in an environment where it was something that we abhorred,” Serena said.

The full interview will be available in Bazaar magazine from March 1, 2022.
