At the 67th Recording Academy Awards, Nigerian singer Tems won in a mostly Afrobeats category with her love song “Love Me Jeje.”
She beat strong competition from Burna Boy, Asake, and Wizkid with their song “MMS,” as well as Yemi Alade and Chris Brown’s “Sensational,” which features Davido and Lojay.
Her song “Love Me Jeje” from her debut album “Born in the Wild” made a mark, making her the second-ever winner of this category, which was introduced last year and first won by South African star Tyla.
In her acceptance speech, Tems expressed her gratitude, saying, “Dear God, thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing me this team.”
She dedicated the award to her mother, celebrating her birthday on February 3.
Tems made history as the first indigenous African artist nominated in the R&B category at the Grammys, although her hit “Burning” did not win, with the award going to SZA’s “Saturn.”
She also missed out on the Best Global Music Album category, which was awarded to Matt B and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Born Temilade Openiyi, the 29-year-old this award marks her second Grammy win; in 2023, she won in the Best Melodic Rap Performance category for her collaboration on “Wait for U” with Future and Drake.
The 2025 Grammy Awards were held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, US.
