Chappell Roan Wins Best New Artist At Grammys 2025, Calls Out Record Labels Over Health Care

Chappell Roan took home the Grammy for Best New Artist on Sunday, marking a spectacular rise to fame for an artist who had been dropped by her previous record label.

Roan, who identifies as openly queer and embraces drag culture, became a standout figure in the pop scene in 2024 with hits like “Good Luck, Babe!”, “Red Wine Supernova,” and “Hot to Go!” from her 2023 album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.”

During her acceptance speech, she urged record labels to provide livable wages and health care, particularly for emerging artists.

“It was devastating to feel so committed to my art and feel so betrayed by the system and dehumanized,” Roan expressed.

She concluded with a powerful line that resonated with the audience: “Labels, we got you, but do you got us?”

In addition to Best New Artist, Roan is nominated for three other Grammys: Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year.

However, she lost Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album to Carpenter.

To win the Best New Artist title, Roan outperformed Carpenter, Benson Boone, Doechii, Khruangbin, Raye, Shaboozey, and Teddy Swims.

Roan’s music career began in 2015 when she signed with Atlantic Records, releasing several singles including “Pink Pony Club.”

After being dropped by the label in 2020, she returned to her hometown to work as a barista before launching her debut full-length album.

She also clinched the Best New Artist award at the 2024 MTV VMAs, besting Shaboozey, Gracie Abrams, Tyla, and Teddy Swims.
