Why Did Miss South Africa Mia Withdraw From 2024 Miss Universe?

Mia le Roux, who was set to represent South Africa at the Miss Universe finals this weekend in Mexico, has withdrawn from the competition.

The 28-year-old made history as the first deaf woman to be crowned Miss South Africa in August, following a competition marred by controversy that led to one finalist dropping out due to trolling related to her Nigerian heritage.

She had dedicated weeks to preparing in Mexico for the prestigious beauty contest finale.

So why then did Mia withdraw from the beauty contest?

Mia was to participate in the finale of the global contest will take place on Saturday, 16 November, in Mexico.

However, this morning the Miss South Africa organisation announced that Mia is withdrawing due to health concerns.

“It is with deep regret that we share the news that Mia le Roux, Miss South Africa 2024, has had to withdraw from the Miss Universe pageant due to health concerns,” read the statement.

“Mia has shown incredible courage and grace throughout this difficult period. Her health and well-being are our utmost priority, and we stand by her side, dedicated to ensuring she regains her strength and returns to full health. Our hearts are with her as she takes the necessary steps toward recovery.”

The last-minute withdrawal means that South Africa will not have a representative at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant, where reigning Miss Universe Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua will crown her successor.
