Twitter has been in the news a lot lately because of its sale to entrepreneur, Elon Musk. This week, Vijaya Gadde, Twitter’s head of legal, policy and trust, is making headlines for her role in navigating these complex issues for the social network. This is following a Tweet, by Elon Musk.
Who is Vijaya Gadde?
Vijaya Gadde is a lawyer at Twitter who oversees the company’s legal, policy, and trust department. She began working for Twitter in 2011.
In the past, Gadde has allegedly been part of decisions such as preventing the spread of unverified stories about Joe Biden’s son.
Following Elon Musk’s post, Gadde has been subjected to online abuse from some users of the platform, according to India Today. This is not the first time she has faced online backlash, as she has been outspoken about her work at Twitter.
In a 2020 interview with Bloomberg, she said,
“No matter what we do we’ve been accused of bias. Leaving content up, taking content down – that’s become pretty much background noise.”
Per Politico, Vijaya Gadde called a virtual meeting with the policy and legal teams to discuss Twitter’s latest ownership. According to reports, she expressed worries. Gadde has always been an advocate for content moderation at Twitter.
Her 2019 interview with Joe Rogan has also been dug up. In this interview, she spoke about how Twitter moderates its content.
Present at this interview was former Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey and journalist Tim Pool. Pool challenged Gadde on Twitter’s content moderation policies in the episode, claiming that the site “restricts speech,” to which Gadde responded,
“Our platform promotes speech unless people violate our rules – in any direction. We don’t make these rules in a vacuum, just to be clear. We have a bunch of people all around the world to give us contacts and the types of behaviour they’re seeing and how that translates into real-world harm. They give us feedback and tell us we should consider different types of rules and different types of perspectives.”
