On Wednesday, July 19, 2022, the US Capitol police tweeted that they had arrested 35 people for “Crowding, Obstructing or Incommoding.” 17 members of Congress were among those arrested including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar.
Footage of the protest shows that neither Ms Ocasio-Cortez nor Ms Omar was handcuffed. However, the attention surrounding what a conservative media organisation dubbed an “AOC, Omar fake handcuff stunt” has been enormous.

Was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or Ilhan Omar placed in handcuffs when they were arrested?
No. During their arrest yesterday, neither Ilhan Omar nor other Squad Democrat AOC was in handcuffs, as evidenced by the video. Both had their hands behind their backs, which people say is the “first thing you learn” as a protester/demonstrator. Apparently, this is so that the police can see that you’re not holding anything and so that they can control your arms more easily.
So, the whole thing about AOC and Omar being “fake” handcuffs is a bit of misinformation. But why did people think that it was fake in the first place?
The answer seems to be because it would be odd for the police to not handcuff people they’re arresting.
What happened to Ilhan Omar, AOC after the arrest?
US representative Ilhan Omar was processed by Capitol Police and given a ticket and will have to pay a $50 fine.

Her picture was taken while she was in custody, however, her prints were not.
Has Ilhan Omar been arrested before?
This is not the first time Ilhan Omar has been arrested. She was also arrested in 2013.
She has a record of 23 traffic incidents, but no arrests beyond that one. Yesterday’s arrest was her second arrest.
Ilhan Omar has always been vocal about abortion rights and has been an active member of the pro-choice movement.
