Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has spoken out about the comparisons made between her and her South African counterpart, Tyla.
The two artists drew attention online after both received nominations in the inaugural Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammys.
Tyla ultimately won, surpassing Ayra Starr and other Nigerian musicians.
In her first interview addressing this issue with BBC Radio 1 Xtra, Ayra Starr emphasized that the comparisons don’t affect her relationship with Tyla.
She referred to the South African star as her “home girl” and her “G.”
Ayra stated, “Tyla is my homegirl, that’s my G. That doesn’t bother me at all. I don’t care about all of that. Less noise, more music.
“Let’s support each other, like, why not? Afrobeats and African music are about to take over the world, and we have to come together to make that happen. There’s no need for comparisons.”
Ayra and Tyla had collaborated together last year in May on a song ‘Girl Next Door’. Both have made waves in their respective fields.
