Bishop T.D. Jakes announced on Sunday that he is stepping down as leader of The Potter’s House, the nondenominational church he founded in 1996.
He named his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Touré Roberts, as the new leaders.
During an emotional sermon, the 67-year-old pastor asked the congregation to welcome the couple with open arms.
“This is legacy,” Jakes said. “Not because they’re family, but because they’re the right fit. They’ve been part of the DNA of this church for years.”
Although he is stepping down from his leadership role, Jakes said he will continue serving the community in other ways.
The leadership change comes months after Jakes suffered a heart attack during a sermon in November.
In a video shared online, Jakes is seen pausing mid-sermon before suddenly shaking, as church members rushed to help him.
Sarah Jakes Roberts, speaking after being called on stage, said, “As co-pastor elect, I’m grateful and honored. And as your daughter, I’m so happy you’re going to get some rest.”
