A pregnant woman’s due date falls just around the same time her husband’s sister is getting married, and their decision not to attend the wedding has sparked significant tension in the family.
In a post to Reddit’s AITA forum, a 28-year-old woman shared that her baby is due in May, and although her husband’s sister was fully aware of this, she scheduled her wedding for the pregnant woman’s 37th week.
The soon-to-be father has since chosen to stay home with his wife as they prepare for the baby’s arrival, leading to a major family dispute.
The couple found out they were expecting in September 2024, and they were thrilled to share the news with both sides of their families.
Shortly afterward, the husband’s sister, 29, got engaged in October — a quick turnaround given that she had only been dating her fiancé for three months, though she had long been eager to get married.
As the in-laws discussed potential wedding dates, the bride and her parents decided they wanted it to be no later than April 2025, near the bride’s home in Texas, about 3.5 hours away from the soon-to-be parents.
However, during the pregnant woman’s first OB-GYN visit in September, she was told that she wouldn’t be able to travel after 34 weeks, for her own and the baby’s safety. Despite this, the in-laws eventually chose April 19 as the wedding date, just three weeks before the woman’s due date.
By February, the pregnant woman decided it would be okay for her husband to attend the wedding alone. But two weeks ago, when she and her husband saw the OB-GYN again, the doctor strongly advised against attending the wedding at all.
“Absolutely not,” the woman recalled the doctor saying. “This would be like rolling the dice. I would not recommend it. If something were to happen, I wouldn’t be able to stop it.”
Although her husband was disappointed, he agreed that the best course of action was for him to stay home with his wife and miss the wedding.
He also expressed frustration that his family chose a date so close to the baby’s due date in the first place.
According to the post, when the husband informed his parents that neither he nor his wife would be attending the wedding, the family reacted with anger.
The woman recalled hearing her father-in-law threaten not to attend either. In response, she calmly said, “I don’t budge… [my husband] simply cannot attend two weeks before my due date as we’re both having this baby together.”
Commenters on the post largely supported the woman’s reasoning. One pointed out that the in-laws had chosen the wedding date knowing the woman’s pregnancy timeline, so they were responsible for the conflict.
Another commenter noted that at 37 weeks, pregnancy is considered full term, and the “baby can come at any time” window is in effect.
A third commenter reminded others that childbirth can be very dangerous. Maternal mortality is more common than many realize, they explained, and there’s always a risk of complications for both the mother and child.
