In Minnesota, Democratic U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar secured a fourth term on Tuesday, defeating former NBA player Royce White.
The Associated Press announced Klobuchar’s victory at 11:43 p.m. EST.
Klobuchar has a history of significant wins, having received 60% of the vote in 2018, 65% in 2012, and 58% in 2006.
White, a grassroots populist conservative who was a strong supporter of Donald Trump, did not receive an endorsement from the former president, and prominent office-holders largely stayed away from his campaign.
Who is Amy Klobuchar?
Klobuchar was born in Plymouth and grew up in the suburbs of the Twin Cities.
Her mother was an elementary school teacher, while her father worked as a sportswriter and columnist for the Star Tribune.
She has one daughter and is married to John D. Bessler, an attorney and law professor.
In 2021, Klobuchar was treated for Stage 1A cancer and is now cancer-free following a “minimally-invasive outpatient procedure” at Mayo Clinic earlier this year.
Klobuchar’s Political Career
Klobuchar was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006, becoming Minnesota’s first female senator.
In her memoir, she has portrayed herself as “The Senator Next Door.”
Klobuchar also ran for president, announcing her candidacy in 2019.
She exited the race in early March 2020 to endorse Joe Biden, who went on to win the presidency in November 2020.
Before becoming Minnesota’s senator, she was elected as Hennepin County Attorney in 1998 and held that position until 2006, when she decided to run for the Senate after Mark Dayton announced he would not seek reelection.
