Melinda French Gates spoke to Gayle King of CBS News about the events that happened that led to her divorce and how it was related to Jeffrey Epstein.
The end of their 27-year marriage saw many details about their partnership emerge that cast it in a new light and Bill has not been seen in the best light by many people after this.
She also spoke about the infidelity which occurred in the marriage saying, “Well, I certainly believe in forgiveness, so I thought we had worked through some of that,”
Last year, Bill Gates publicly admitted to the affair he had with his employee in 2000, which was 6 years after he and Melinda were married. When Gayle King asked if there were other infidelities, French Gates said, “Those are questions Bill needs to answer.”
She also explained what ultimately caused the divorce saying,
“It wasn’t one moment or one specific thing that happened. There just came a point in time where there was enough there that I realized it just wasn’t healthy, and I couldn’t trust what we had.”
When asked what sort of relationship they have now, Melinda says, “We are friendly, but not friends.”
She also said that during her darkest days, she shed “a lot of tears” and was “literally laying on the floor and the carpet…thinking, How can this be? How can I get up? How am I gonna move forward?”
“I gave every single piece of myself to this marriage,” she said.
Regarding the Microsoft founder’s association with deceased financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, French Gates says she met him once and regretted it. “He was abhorrent,” she said. “He was evil personified. I had nightmares about it afterwards. So my heart breaks for these young women. Because that’s how I felt, and here I’m an older woman…. He was awful.”
Now that she is done with that chapter of her life, she is focusing on more fun things like philanthropy and dating. She says she is “dipping her toes into the water” of dating. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for her.
