Liv and Mia Tyler recently shared the surprising story of how they found out they were sisters — at one of their dad Steven Tyler’s concerts.
The two, who are half-sisters, said their moms Bebe Buell (Liv’s mom) and Cyrinda Foxe (Mia’s mom) took them to the same Aerosmith show when they were around 9 years old.
“There weren’t any other kids backstage, so we just ran around and played,” Mia, now 46, said on the “Sibling Revelry” podcast with Kate and Oliver Hudson. “We were hanging out in this VIP area when a fan came up and asked, ‘Are you two sisters? You look so cute together.’”
Liv, who mostly grew up in Maine with her grandparents, said the question shocked her — because at the time, she didn’t even know Steven Tyler was her dad.
She had been raised thinking her father was musician Todd Rundgren, who even signed her birth certificate and helped raise her.
Liv remembered that night clearly — Guns N’ Roses was opening for Aerosmith at a venue called Great Woods. She was in the audience, excited to see the band play. That’s when she saw another girl who looked just like her.
“She had on the same Aerosmith shirt, spiral perm, pink lipstick — even the same sneakers,” Liv said. “It was like looking in a mirror.”
Then, something unexpected happened — Axl Rose dedicated the song “Sweet Child o’ Mine” to Mia, and brought her on stage.
That moment made Liv start to question things. After the show, she looked at her mom and asked, “Is Steven my dad?” Her mom started crying and confirmed it.
From there, Liv began building a relationship with both Steven and Mia. But she also admitted that the truth was hard on Todd Rundgren, the man who had been a father figure to her.
“I love him. I just don’t talk to him enough. I know it’s still painful,” she said.
Steven Tyler also has two other children — Chelsea and Taj — with his second wife, Teresa Barrick.
