Since Selena Gomez first hinted at recording a brand new album, fans have been eagerly awaiting its release.
After her 2020 album ‘Rare,’ she has released a Spanish EP (‘Revelacion’) and several standalone singles (‘Single Soon,’ ‘Love On’), but an album announcement is still pending.
Selena has also made a return to acting, starring in Only Murders in the Building, and is currently generating Oscars buzz for her role in the new film Emilia Pérez.
Now, Selena has given fans an update on when they might hear new music from her, and it’s not looking promising for them.
In an interview with Variety ahead of her film Emilia Pérez, Selena mentioned, “I currently don’t have anything, but I will say music is going to always be a part of me. So I don’t think any movements are happening right now, but it will always be in my life.”
This isn’t the first time Selena has tempered expectations for new music.
Earlier this year, she discussed her role in Only Murders in the Building, saying, “I’m in love with this right now. I’m enjoying this.”
On the Smartless podcast, she shared, “I never really intended on being a singer full-time but apparently that hobby turned into something else. I don’t think I’m the best singer – but I do know how to tell stories.”
She later elaborated to Rolling Stone, stating, “I love film. I love TV – I just feel like I have not done a lot of the things that I want to do in that space.”
Selena ended by saying: “It’s not ‘no, never’ [to music], it’s more that I would like to explore [acting] more.”
While it seems like Selena is hitting pause on music for the time being, fans can still look forward to her original songs featured on the Emilia Pérez soundtrack.
She performs the solo tracks ‘Bienvenida’ and ‘Mi Camino,’ and also collaborates with her castmates Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña on ‘El Trío’ and ‘Perdóname.’
In April, Selena mentioned to Billboard that she was working on an album, stating, “I would like to say that I am working towards an album. I feel like I’m brewing and I’m in the process of really creating some great songs, hopefully.” However, it seems that project is currently on hold.
Whether Selena will resume work on her album after the press tour for Emilia Pérez or shift her focus to her next acting role remains to be seen.
