Georgia Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Setting Fire to Home of Stalking Victim

A man from Georgia is facing charges of attempted murder after allegedly setting fire to a home where a mother and her child were inside, following a history of stalking and harassing the woman. Charles Battles, 46, is currently on probation for his previous behavior, which included climbing on top of the woman’s car. The incident occurred in Gordon County, with Battles accused of setting the home ablaze before fleeing. Thankfully, both the mother and child survived the attack.

Authorities managed to apprehend Battles after a manhunt, charging him with arson, aggravated stalking, and attempted murder. The condition of the victims is unknown, but they managed to escape the destroyed home. Battles had a previous arrest for harassing the victim and pleaded guilty to aggravated stalking in October. Court records show that he caused damage to the victim’s car and went to her house with the intent to intimidate her.

Police recovered substantial evidence linking Battles to the fire, leading to his arrest near Scottsville with the help of private citizens. The Gordon County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of resolving the case swiftly due to the severity of the crimes. Sheriff Mitch Ralston highlighted the collaborative efforts to bring Battles to justice, ensuring he will be held accountable in court.
