Florida Home Nurse Sentenced for Neglect of Premature Baby

A woman in Florida who worked as a home nurse for a couple with a premature baby has been sentenced for child neglect after pleading guilty.

Kelly Perrigo, 62, was working as a nighttime nurse for the baby, who required around-the-clock care. The parents became suspicious when they noticed discrepancies in how much the baby was being fed, leading them to review surveillance footage that showed Perrigo dumping the remainder of the formula instead of feeding it to the baby through his feeding tube.

The mother of the baby confronted Perrigo over text messages, where Perrigo cited “poor judgment” for her actions. Perrigo also claimed that she had no pediatric care experience and was fired from another pediatric nursing job. The baby suffered from weight gain issues, low energy, and even liver failure due to his lack of proper nutrition.

Perrigo was sentenced to one year in jail and had to surrender her nursing licenses. The mother of the baby expressed the long-term health issues her child will face as a result of Perrigo’s neglect.
