A divorce can be a very difficult situation for one to cope with, no matter the reason for it. It can turn an otherwise productive person into a shadow of themselves. But there are things to do to get through this period.

Coping With A Divorce

1. Recognize that it is okay to have a turmoil of feelings. It is okay to be angry, sad, exhausted, frustrated etc. Change can be a very frightening process, how much more a change from being married to being single again.

2. Give yourself a break. You need to relax, take sometime off work. You may even decide to reduce the hours in which you work. That too is perfectly fine. During this period, it is also advisable to surround yourself with friends or a support group where you can talk to other people who may be passing through the same thing.

3. Avoid power struggles with your former spouse. If a discussion would cause a fight or even a heated argument, it is best you walk away. Also, do well not to involve your kids in the conflict.

4. Reassure your children and listen more. You need to constantly reassure your children that you would be there for them. This is also the time to listen more to the kids, especially because you never know how well the other partner is listening. Let your children know that they can rely on you.
