A Visit from the Goon Squad

Jennifer Egan’s acclaimed novel, “A Visit from the Goon Squad,” is currently causing a stir on Spotify. Named the Best Book of the Century (So Far) by the platform’s senior editor, this Pulitzer Prize-winning novel from 2010 has found itself back in the limelight.

Spotify describes the book as a tale that revolves around an aging punk rocker’s decline into obscurity, depicting the inevitable passage of time. However, the true magic of the book lies in its portrayal of how our stories endure through memory long after we are gone.

Told in a nonlinear format inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction,” the novel consists of 13 interconnected stories centered on Bennie Salazar, an aging punk rocker and record executive, and his assistant Sasha, who has a troubled past. Set across various locations such as New York, Italy, and Kenya, themes of time, aging, memory, self-destruction, and redemption are explored throughout the intertwined narratives.

Egan, though not considering herself a “music person,” drew inspiration from the rock, pop, and punk genres while crafting this novel. NPR describes it as an outstanding rock and roll novel, with interlocking tales that merge like the tracks selected by a DJ to create a vibrant narrative.

The book has garnered acclaim beyond Spotify, being featured in The New York Times’ Top 100 Books of the 21st Century, The Atlantic’s Great American Novels list, and receiving recognition as Entertainment Weekly’s Best Book of the Decade.

With a small-screen adaptation in the works, A24 has acquired the rights to Egan’s novel and plans to adapt it with Olivia Wilde directing and executive producing. The project will also include Egan’s 2022 follow-up, “The Candy House.”

Despite being over a decade old, “A Visit from the Goon Squad” continues to resonate with audiences, showcasing the enduring power of Egan’s storytelling.
