Dr Tulia Ackson is the current Speaker of Tanzania’s National Assembly.
She was born in Bulyaga Ward, Tukuyu Division, Rungwe District, Mbeya Region, on November 23, 1976.

Education
From 1984 through 1990, Tulia Ackson went to Mabonde Primary School in Tukuyu. She attended Loleza Girls Secondary School in Mbeya, where she received a Secondary Education certificate in 1994, and then Zanaki Girls Secondary School, where she received an Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education.
She then went on to law school. She earned a bachelor’s degree in 2001 from the University of Dar es Salaam. In 2003, Ackson graduated from law school with honors. She completed the Tanzanian Bar Exams in 2004 and received a Certificate of Legal Practice. She was admitted to the University of Cape Town for Doctoral studies in 2005, and she graduated in 2007 with a Doctorate in Philosophy.
Career
She was named Associate Dean of the University of Dar es Salaam School of Law in 2009, a position she maintained for six years, including two three-year terms. She was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2011.
In February 2014, Tanzania’s President, Jakaya Kikwete, appointed Ackson as a member of Tanzania’s first Constituent Assembly, representing higher learning institutions. She is a member of the Tanganyika Law Society, East African Law Society, and Southern African Development Law Society.
Her areas of expertise include social security law, labour law, wildlife management laws, trusts, probate and estate administration, project financing, and mining law.
Her experience also includes general commercial agreements such as joint ventures, agency agreements, distributorship agreements, service agreements, mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings (IPOs), management buy-outs, employment, commercial, and competition law.
She is a legal professional with over 10 years of experience. She often writes and talks on employment law matters, and her practice includes all aspects of Tanzania employment law, from hiring to firing to settling conflicts between employers and employees.
In 2008 she wrote a book titled Social Security Fragmentation in Tanzania: The Challenge of Governance.
Ackson was named Deputy Attorney General by President Jakaya Kikwete on 9 September 2015, serving until November 2015.
She was named as a Member of Parliament by President John Magufuli on November 16th, 2015.
