Rosie O’Donnell is speaking out about how surprised she is that fellow comedian Ellen DeGeneres has moved to the U.K.
Rosie, 63, who recently moved to Ireland with her 12-year-old child, Clay, told Us Weekly she didn’t expect Ellen, 67, to make a similar move.
“I’ve never really known Ellen to talk about politics, so I was shocked when I read she left because of President Trump,” Rosie said. “I’ve always been open about my political views it’s just how I’ve always been.”
Rosie moved to Dublin in January and has been clear that her decision to leave the U.S. was because of Trump’s presidency.
Ellen, on the other hand, hasn’t publicly said why she left. But according to Vanity Fair, she reportedly told friends that the political climate and election were part of the reason, and that she and her wife don’t plan to move back.
Ellen has been sharing moments from her new life in the U.K. on Instagram, including a recent photo of her wife capturing a double rainbow near their new home.
Rosie, meanwhile, has been posting TikToks about her long-standing issues with Trump, saying that what’s happened in the U.S. since he took office made her want to leave.
“I was open about why I left, so it didn’t surprise anyone,” Rosie said. She also mentioned that she and Ellen aren’t close: “We’re not really part of each other’s lives, and it’s been a little awkward. But I wish her well. I hope she finds peace and happiness.”
Since moving, Ellen has sold most of her U.S. properties, though she still owns at least one home, where she says she has someone taking care of the chickens she still keeps there while also growing her flock in the U.K.
