Why Did Katy Perry Leave American Idol?

Katy Perry is saying goodbye to American Idol.

The “Dark Horse” singer revealed her departure from the judge’s panel during a February 2024 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, announcing that the 22nd season of the reality singing competition would be her last.

The news took fans by surprise, especially those who adored Perry’s over-the-top themed outfits and her constant encouragement for contestants to persevere. 

Perry joined ABC’s American Idol revival in 2018, alongside fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, who in April 2024.

In her final American Idol episode in May 2024, the 13-time Grammy-nominated artist performed “What Makes a Woman” with contestant Jack Blocker, wearing a striking gown adorned with the faces of 160 former contestants. 

She later posted photos of the duet on Instagram, captioning the post, “There it is… 7 years.” The season following her departure debuted on March 9.

So, why did Katy Perry leave American Idol?

Perry decided to leave American Idol in 2024 to focus on other projects, including potential new music.

“I’ve been in the studio for a while, so [Richie and Bryan] figured something is coming,” the Teenage Dream singer shared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. “I love the show so much, but I want to go out and see the world and maybe bring new music.”

In July 2024, Perry dropped her single “Woman’s World,” from her upcoming album 143, which was released the following September.
