Who Was Ernestina Sodi?

Ernestina Sodi Miranda, a renowned Mexican journalist, historian, and the sister of famed singer Thalía, passed away on November 8, 2024, in Mexico City at the age of 64. Her daughter, actress Camila Sodi, confirmed the news in an Instagram story, saying, “Ernestina Sodi, my mom, the grandmother of my babies—November 8, 2024.” According to reports, Ernestina’s death was attributed to complications following two heart attacks.

A Life of Achievement and Resilience

Born on July 24, 1960, Ernestina Sodi pursued an academic career in Art History with specialized training in aesthetics. Her journey into the public eye began with a successful modelling career, culminating in her winning the Miss Distrito Federal title in 1977. Transitioning from modelling to writing, Ernestina became an accomplished author, penning several works that explored dark and complex themes.

Her 2002 memoir, Líbranos del mal (“Deliver Us From Evil”), brought attention to the harrowing experience of her 2002 kidnapping, an ordeal she endured alongside her sister, actress Laura Zapata. Her other work, Los cerezos negros (“The Black Cherry Tree”), delves into the issues surrounding human trafficking.

Personal Life and Advocacy

Ernestina was married twice. Her first marriage to Fernando González Parra, a lawyer, journalist, and owner of the Mexican newspaper Ovaciones, was marked by turmoil. They had two daughters, actress and singer Camila Sodi and Marina Sodi, an anthropologist and plastic artist. After enduring physical and psychological abuse, Ernestina divorced González Parra. In 2011, she married Mauricio Camps, who served as Mexico City’s Secretary of Public Education. However, the marriage ended two years later.

In October, Ernestina Sodi was hospitalized following two heart attacks, from which she ultimately could not recover. Her passing leaves behind a legacy of resilience, dedication to her craft, and advocacy for causes that reflected the struggles she faced in her own life.
