American Nurse’s Tragic Death While Vacationing in Hungary: Suspect in Custody After Police Investigation

A nurse from Western New York, Mackenzie Michalski, 31, was tragically found dead in Hungary while on vacation, leading to the arrest of a 37-year-old Irish citizen. Michalski, remembered for her compassion and dedication to caring for others, disappeared from a local Budapest nightclub on Nov. 5. Friends and family realized she was missing when she failed to board her return flight, prompting Hungarian authorities to initiate a search.

Michalski, last seen on Nov. 4 in the Jewish Quarter of Budapest, had left her belongings in her Airbnb, raising alarms. Hungarian police soon identified a man seen with her on the night she disappeared, leading to his arrest. According to police, the man took Michalski to his apartment, where he later admitted to her death, claiming it was an “accident.” Police reports state he attempted to cover up the incident, disposing of her body near Lake Balaton after conducting internet searches on handling a deceased body.

Michalski’s parents have travelled to Budapest, and her family and friends are mourning her loss, celebrating her as a compassionate, joyful presence who dedicated herself to others. Others have also shared heartfelt tributes, describing her as a “kind and loving” caregiver.

A candlelight vigil is planned in her honour at Fredonia’s Barker Commons on Nov. 9. The community will come together to remember her enduring spirit and dedication to helping others.
