When is Disney’s Moana2 Hitting the Cinemas?

It’s been eight incredible years since Disney’s Moana found its way into our hearts. 

The animated film, starring Auli’i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, and Alan Tudyk, left an indelible mark with hits like “You’re Welcome” and “How Far I’ll Go.”

Fast-forward to February 2024, and Disney fans are abuzz with excitement.

Walt Disney Animation Studios has announced a highly anticipated sequel, promising more adventure, music, and magic.

Released on October 8, 2024, just over a month before the eagerly awaited sequel hits theaters, Disney treated us to a two-minute special look at the film, offering a glimpse of what to expect along with some brand new original tracks.

In the caption for this exciting sneak peek, the executives wrote: “See what lies beyond with Disney’s #Moana2, arriving only in cinemas on November 29!”

Sharing the clip on their social media accounts, it’s evident that fans are eagerly counting down the days until the Moana sequel arrives.

One fan exclaimed: “Best animated movie of all time…” while another enthusiastically commented: “Amazing!!! What a trailer…can’t wait to see it…IN A THEATER – love it.” 

The clip features a touching moment between Moana and her little sister, prompting one observant fan to note: “The fact that Moana said to her lil sis the same thing that her grandma said to her in the first movie🥹: ‘There is nowhere I could go that I won’t be with you.'” (sic)

In addition to the new teaser clip, we also got to see a stunning new movie poster for Moana 2, showcasing the determined titular character alongside the beloved Maui, Hei Hei the Rooster, and Pua.

When is it out?

Moana 2 is set to hit cinemas in the UK on November 29, 2024. 

The movie will debut in the US two days earlier, with a release date of November 27. 

Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger shared his excitement for the sequel, stating: “Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise. And we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theatres this November.”

The first teaser trailer was unveiled at the end of May, giving fans a glimpse of what to expect from the next installment in the franchise—and it certainly did not disappoint.

Actor Dwayne Johnson, who voices Maui, shared the stunning teaser trailer on Tuesday, August 6, with the caption: “Can I get a chee hoo🪝 November 27th

The teaser showcases Moana and Maui navigating the seas, with Moana’s loyal friend Heihei also making an appearance. 

Disney previously announced that there will be a three-year time jump, stating: “Moana 2 reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers.”

What is Moana 2 about?

Disney stated: “Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui, and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. 

After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.” 

Additionally, reports indicate that Moana 2 will replace the originally planned Moana series on Disney+.

Who is in the cast?

Fans will be excited to hear that both Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson will reprise their roles as Moana and Maui. While Disney has yet to confirm it, characters like Heihei (voiced by Alan Tudyk) and Moana’s pet Pua may also make a return in the sequel. 

On Tuesday, February 27, Auli’i Cravalho took to Instagram to announce her involvement.

Sharing a video of herself, she wrote: “The feeling when you’re officially returning to Motunui,” adding, “We’re sailing WAY beyond the reef this November… #Moana2.”
