Victoria Monét Confirms Breakup with John Gaines After Nearly a Year

Victoria Monét has revealed that she has been single for nearly a year. On Monday, the “On My Mama” singer confirmed her breakup with John Gaines.

The two share a 3-year-old daughter named Hazel. In a joint statement shared online, they wrote: “With good intentions, we honestly have been avoiding a formal statement about something as natural and personal as love.”

Despite wanting to keep their separation private, they felt the need to address false rumours and speculation about their relationship. “Ultimately, we decided to be open and address it in hopes of putting a period on the question marks for the sake of our healing process,” they stated.

For the past 10 months, they have been respectfully and privately navigating the end of their relationship. The statement continued: “Though we still completely adore and respect each other, we are no longer a couple.” Monét, 35, and Gaines, 33, emphasised that their breakup was not due to infidelity, toxic behaviour, or drama. They explained: “We both just have some fundamental growing to do, and that growth is best done apart, so we can remain the best versions of ourselves for our daughter.”

They made it clear that Hazel is their number one priority and that their relationship status will never change that. Both expressed their commitment to personal growth and trust in God to place them where they belong in due time.

The former couple thanked their supporters for their care and concern, asking for peace and space as they raise their daughter. They also reassured that, despite the change in their public-facing title, they plan to remain a family and requested understanding when seen together with Hazel.

They concluded by expressing gratitude: “We appreciate everyone for hearing us out and hope to be kept in well-intentioned prayers.”

While it’s unclear when Monét and Gaines began dating, they first sparked romance rumours after he appeared in her “Moments” music video, released in February 2020. They announced they were expecting their daughter in December of the same year. Though they seemingly split around November 2023, the pair still attended the 2024 Grammys together in February.

The family of three walked the red carpet in coordinated Atelier Versace outfits, with Monét and Hazel donning matching brown gowns for the special occasion. That night, Monét won awards for Best New Artist, Best R&B Album, and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.
