US to protect privacy of women who travel out to have legal abortions

President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, on Monday, announced a new rule to protect the privacy of women who travel out of their home state to have legal abortion.

The announcement made following a pivotal court decision that severely curtailed legal abortion in 21 states.

The rule promotes a non-disclosure policy of private health information of individuals who seek lawful reproductive health services.

Melanie Fontes Rainer of the Office for Civil Rights pointed out that women should not live in fear that their medical details might be used to target or track them.

She urged women to come forward and file a complaint if they believed their privacy rights had been violated.

Reports from the Health and Human Services agency revealed that 30,000 public comments were made before finalizing its new rule, further strengthening the Health Insurance Portability Act (HIPAA) of 1996.

Recall that in 2022, conservative judges appointed by former President Donald Trump struck out a half-century of legal precedent that upheld the constitutional right to abortion which sparked widespread outrage.

Women in Republican-controlled states have since faced problems accessing reproductive care including for non-viable pregnancies and IVF treatment.
