The Recording Academy has reportedly shifted South African singer Tyla’s self-titled debut album into the pop Grammys category, even though it was initially submitted for R&B consideration.
According to Hollywood Reporter, the R&B screening committee moved the project from Best R&B Album to Best Pop Vocal Album.
If nominated in the pop category, Tyla would be the first African artist to compete there.
Her album would face tough competition from Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine, Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft, Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, and Sabrina Carpenter’s Short N’ Sweet.
In response to this change, Tyla excitedly stated on X, “I make it all.”
It’s worth noting that Tyla recently won the inaugural Grammy for Best African Music Performance with her hit song ‘Water.’
