A tragic incident recently occurred in a North Carolina prison when 60-year-old former middle school teacher Ernest Nichols, who was convicted of raping a 15-year-old girl, was found dead in his dormitory. Allegedly, convicted murderer Wilbert Baldwin, 41, has been charged with his murder. Baldwin, who was serving time for second-degree murder, was served with a murder warrant and returned to prison.
Nichols, a physical education instructor at Ransom Middle School, was convicted of statutory rape after posing as his teenage son online and abusing the victim at his home over several months. Despite facing multiple felony charges, Nichols pleaded guilty to one count of statutory rape in 2011 and was sentenced to 18 years in prison. The victim’s family supported the plea deal, and Nichols was set to be released in 2027.
