In 1940, two brothers, Richard and Maurice McDonald, embarked on a journey that would forever change the restaurant industry. Leaving behind unsuccessful careers in the movie business, the siblings, known as Dick and Mac, ventured to California where they opened a small eatery. What began as a modest BBQ joint soon evolved into something revolutionary- the Speedee Service System.
On May 15, 1940, Dick and Mac introduced a limited menu at their San Bernardino restaurant: hamburgers, french fries, and milkshakes – the very foundations on which McDonald’s was built. Remarkably, a hamburger cost a mere 15 cents, setting the stage for what would become a global phenomenon.
Over the years, McDonald’s underwent numerous transformations, including the adoption of its iconic Golden Arches in 1953. In 1955, a man by the name of Ray Kroc opened the first McDonald’s franchise in Des Plaines, Illinois, after teaming up with Dick and Mac. Finding success with the fast food model, Kroc acquired the brothers’ business in 1961 for $2.7 million.
Today, McDonald’s stands as the most popular fast food restaurant worldwide, generating over $10 billion in revenue in 2023, with more than 36,000 locations in over 100 countries.
Although the original San Bernardino location was demolished in 1972, a McDonald’s museum now stands in its place. For those seeking a taste of nostalgia, the third franchise opened in Downey, California in 1953, still operates today.
While the era of 15 cent hamburgers is long gone, McDonald’s legacy as a pioneer in the fast food industry remains enduring.
