Start Your Day Right: The Impact of Breakfast Choices on Your Health

As you greet the day, your food choices set the tone. What you eat, especially daily, can impact your overall health. Starting your day with a healthy, nourishing breakfast can set you up for success.

According to Jordan Langhough, RD, CPT, a registered dietitian, and owner of Jordan Langhough Nutrition & Movement, food is more than just calories. Your daily food choices can influence various aspects of your health like blood sugar, hormones, inflammation, heart health, gut health, and energy levels.

Langhough emphasizes that over time, our food choices can impact our longevity. Understanding how food affects our bodies can help us make choices that support our health.

Experts caution against a popular breakfast combination that includes bacon and cheddar cheese. This pairing can be problematic as both foods are high in saturated fat and sodium. Consuming them together regularly can lead to weight gain, increased inflammation, and a higher risk of heart disease.

Saturated fat intake from foods like bacon and cheddar cheese can elevate cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart disease. Similarly, consuming too much sodium can stress blood vessels, leading to heart-related issues. Bacon, in particular, is classified as a Group 1 Carcinogen, linked to increased risks of colorectal cancer, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes.

While bacon and cheddar cheese can be enjoyed occasionally, experts suggest moderation. Choose nitrate-free bacon and low-sodium cheese, and consider them as additions to a balanced meal rather than the focus. Pair them with whole grains, egg whites, and vegetables for a nutritious breakfast.

If you’re looking to switch up your breakfast routine, registered dietitians recommend alternatives like avocado toast with a fried egg, oatmeal made with soy milk, yogurt bowl with fruit and low-sugar granola, or a vegetable egg scramble cooked in olive oil. Choosing a variety of nutrient-rich foods can support your overall health and well-being.

In the world of breakfast choices, moderation and balance are key. Making mindful decisions about what you eat in the morning can have a significant impact on your health in the long run.
