Queen Margrethe of Denmark, Hospitalized After Fall, Cancels Royal Appearance

Queen Margrethe of Denmark was hospitalized following a fall at her residence.

Reports indicate that on September 18, the 84-year-old former monarch was admitted to a hospital in Copenhagen after the incident at Fredensborg Castle.

Although she was reported to be in good condition, her scheduled appearance at an event the next day was cancelled.

Fredensborg Castle is a seasonal retreat for the Danish royal family, typically used during summer.

Queen Margrethe was expected to participate in a royal engagement on September 19, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Department of Archeology at Aarhus University.

However, an official statement from the court confirmed her attendance was cancelled, likely due to the fall, but provided no further details.

According to her royal bio, Queen Margrethe pursued archaeology studies at the University of Cambridge in England, specializing in prehistoric archaeology.

She has expressed that if she were not Queen, she would have chosen a career in archaeology, as reported by the Associated Press.

Queen Margrethe has continued her royal duties despite her abdication in January, albeit with fewer ceremonial responsibilities.

In a significant moment earlier this year, Queen Margrethe made history by voluntarily stepping down from the throne on the 52nd anniversary of her accession, marking the first time a Danish sovereign has done so in almost 900 years.

Her decision, announced in December 2023, surprised many as she had previously indicated her intention to reign for life, causing a stir across the nation.

This made her eldest son, King Frederik X, and his wife, Queen Mary, and the couple’s four children move up a spot in the line of succession

Queen Margrethe had been the longest-reigning monarch in Danish history before abdicating the role.
