Piers Morgan was left screaming in agony after experiencing the pain of giving birth during Wednesday’s live broadcast of Good Morning Britain. The TENS machine – Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation – had been used to simulate the pain of childbirth by sending electrical currents through his abdomen.
A transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) unit is a battery-operated device that some people use to treat pain. TENS units work by delivering small electrical impulses through electrodes that have adhesive pads to attach them to a person's skin. These electrical impulses flood the nervous system, reducing its ability to transmit pain signals to the spinal cord and brain. The same electrical impulses also stimulate the body to produce natural pain relievers called endorphins.
Piers, 54, tried hopelessly to batte the pain and when he could not, he was seen gritting his teeth.
He later apologized for his claims that men also suffer during the birthing process, telling viewers: “On balance, the women of Great Britain, I probably owe you a slight apology. I’m very glad we don’t have to go through this.
“I’ve got to say that was agony. If that’s what you honestly go through, my respect for women, in terms of childbirth, has gone through the roof.”
The simulation done on Piers Morgan lasted for five minutes after which, he said: “I will never joke about childbirth again. It was utter agony.”
He later went on Instagram to say: “I experienced simulated childbirth live on air today. It was agony… and this was just at ‘mild contraction level’. Ladies of the world, I will never doubt your labour room torment again.”
FYI: I was deprived of any gas/air or epidural for THE WHOLE FIVE MINUTES.
