OnlyFans to Ban Sexually Explicit Content From October 1

OnlyFans is doing away with the very content that made it famous. The platform made the surprise announcement that starting Oct. 1, sexually explicit content will be prohibited from the app. This includes sexually explicit nudity, intercourse and masturbation.

A statement by the company reads,

“In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform, and to continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines. Creators will continue to be allowed to post content containing nudity as long as it is consistent with our Acceptable Use Policy.”

The company has said that it will release more information on this subject in the coming days.

“We remain dedicated to our community of 130 million users and over 2 million creators that have earned over $5 billion on our platform,” the company said.

OnlyFans is known mostly for its adult-only content and sexually explicit photos and videos which have made the company worth skyrocket to roughly $1 billion. The social media platform took off during the pandemic in 2020 as more people searched for creative ways to make money from home.

However, despite its huge successes, it has struggled to find investors as some VCs are prohibited from investing in adult content, due to agreements with their limited partners. Other investors are also worried about the lax rules and controls which the company has in place to prevent minors from subscribing to adult content. OnlyFans is also trying to comply with requests from its banking partners and payout providers, as in the past year, Mastercard and Visa have banned the use of their cards on PornHub.

OnlyFans would not be the first subscription-based platform to ban adult content, as Patreon and Tumblr have done so in the past years.
