New Jersey Couple Accused of Holding Daughter Captive for Seven Years

In a shocking case that has left the community reeling, a New Jersey couple has been accused of holding their daughter captive for a grueling seven years. Brenda Spencer and Branndon Mosley reportedly kept their now-18-year-old daughter locked away in a bare room, where she was forced to use a bucket as a toilet.

The disturbing discovery was made on May 10, 2025, when authorities were alerted to the situation by the young woman herself. She revealed that she had been held captive for years and subjected to sexual abuse by Mosley, her stepfather.

The investigation that followed unearthed a harrowing timeline of abuse that began in 2018, when the girl was just in sixth grade. She was removed from school and confined to her mother’s house, where she was reportedly kept in a dog crate for a year before being moved to a padlocked bathroom and eventually a bare room with an alarm system to prevent her escape.

The nightmare finally came to an end on May 8, when the girl managed to escape the residence with the help of a neighbor. Authorities described the living conditions inside the house as “squalid,” with numerous animals, including dogs and chinchillas, found on the premises. Shockingly, a 13-year-old child who had also been removed from school years prior was discovered in the residence as well.

Spencer and Mosley were arrested and charged with a litany of heinous crimes, including kidnapping, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, aggravated assault, child endangerment, criminal restraint, and possession of weapons. Mosely faces additional charges of sexual assault.

Their attorneys have entered not guilty pleas on their behalf, and the potential sentences they face are severe. Mosley could be looking at life imprisonment, while Spencer could be sentenced to 30 years in prison if convicted.
