Miley Cyrus, the 32-year-old singer, recently shared that she still feels very insecure about her body.
On Monday, June 9, during Monica Lewinsky’s podcast “Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky,” Miley talked about how mean comments and memes from 2013 still affect her.
She remembered body-shaming memes from around the time of her famous 2013 MTV VMAs performance with Robin Thicke. Miley said people would put her head on “very unattractive things.”
“I still see that when I put on a bathing suit to this day,” she explained, adding that she now wears “very modest bathing suits.”
She mentioned a recent trip where her friends wore string bikinis, but she chose shorts and a tank top.
Her sister even joked that Miley was dressing like a “grandma at the beach,” which made Miley realize her insecurity about those old memes.
Miley also spoke about how her 2013 VMAs performance impacted her life in other ways. She said she was “so embarrassed” and “got hit so hard” by the criticism.
She even recalled a time when her brother and sister didn’t want to go to school because they were so humiliated to be related to her. Miley has five siblings: Brandi, Trace, Christopher, Braison, and Noah.
Miley explained that this period was “really hard” and she “lost everything” in her personal life because of her professional choices.
“If I kept dressing or acting a certain way, my relationships fell apart,” she said.
She added that men she tried to date, or who she was engaged to, didn’t want to be with a woman whose “sexual expression part was not for them,” as it was “shared with the world.”
