Meghan Markle recently shared her past experiences with beauty standards in Hollywood, specifically regarding her freckles.
On her podcast, “Confessions of a Female Founder,” she spoke with Jamie Kern Lima, the founder of It Cosmetics, about the challenges she faced as a young actress.
Meghan recalled that her commercial agent would not submit her for beauty or skincare advertisements because she had freckles. She was told directly that freckles were not considered a sign of beauty in the industry at the time.
The Duchess of Sussex noted that this lack of representation meant that people with features like hers didn’t see themselves reflected in mainstream beauty.
Jamie Kern Lima discussed her motivation for starting It Cosmetics in 2008, which was to use real people of all ages, shapes, sizes, skin tones, and with various skin challenges as models.
Meghan praised this as a revolutionary idea at the time, even though it might seem more normal now.
Currently, Meghan is embracing her natural look. She even appeared makeup-free on Lima’s podcast earlier this week.
In a separate discussion on her podcast, Meghan also shared her experiences with body image related to her hair during her college years.
She described the difficulties of styling her hair with limited tools and recalled non-Black sorority sisters noticing the smell of her hot comb.
She explained that this was simply how she managed the texture of her hair at the time.
