Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón has broken her silence after being dropped from the Emilia Pérez Oscar campaign due to controversy surrounding her past tweets.
On Instagram, Gascón acknowledged director Jacques Audiard’s decision to sever ties with her, saying she’s stepping back to let the film speak for itself.
“I sincerely apologize to everyone who has been hurt along the way.
“Following Jacques interview that I understand, I decided, for the film, for Jacques, for the cast, for the incredible crew who deserves it, for the beautiful adventure we all had together, to let the work talk for itself, hoping my silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is, a beautiful ode to love and difference,” she wrote.
Gascón, the first openly transgender performer nominated for an Oscar, has faced backlash over resurfaced tweets containing racist, antisemitic, and xenophobic language.
Despite repeated apologies, including a CNN en Español interview, she’s been removed from the film’s US Oscar campaign and will no longer attend awards events in LA.
Tensions are reportedly high between Gascón and Netflix, which distributes Emilia Pérez in the US, Canada, and the UK.
