FEC Chair Ellen Weintraub Reveals Trump’s Plan to Fire Her

Federal Election Commission Chair Ellen Weintraub is preparing for a battle after President Trump attempted to fire her.

Weintraub, a Democrat, shared a letter on X purportedly from the President, informing her of her removal from the FEC.

However, she’s not going down without a fight, stating that there’s a legal process for replacing commissioners, and this isn’t it .

Weintraub has been a commissioner at the FEC since 2002 and was recently elected chair for 2025. She’s known for stirring up controversy and advocating for campaign finance reform.

The FEC is an independent agency with over 300 employees, led by six commissioners, including Republican Vice Chair James Trainor.

This move is part of Trump’s broader effort to overhaul the federal workforce, which has included freezing hiring, offering buyouts, and firing critics and those appointed during the Biden administration.

Weintraub’s removal would likely be seen as a politically motivated move, and she’s vowing to fight it.

As she said, “I’ve been lucky to serve the American people & stir up some good trouble along the way… That’s not changing anytime soon.”
