Kamala Harris Formally Wins Democratic Presidential Nomination, Picks Running Mate

Kamala Harris has officially become the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) revealed this after a virtual roll call of delegates. The party’s national convention begins in Chicago in two weeks.

This nomination was confirmed shortly before Harris was set to announce her running mate.
She and the new running mate will start a campaign in seven battleground states, starting with a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday evening.

The formal nomination on Monday followed Harris winning the votes of a majority of pledged delegates three days earlier.

Harris formally clinched the nomination just over two weeks after President Biden’s big announcement that he wouldn’t run for re-election in 2024 against Trump.

Biden’s surprising decision followed intense party pressure, as he had a tough time in the recent debate with Trump. His hesitant debate performance raised questions about his fitness for another term.

Biden’s swift support for Harris sparked a wave of endorsements from top Democratic figures. In just over a day, Harris secured her party’s nomination with the verbal backing of a majority of convention delegates.

Now that the virtual roll call for the presidential nomination is finished, DNC regulations permit Harris to nominate her running mate.

Has Kamala Harris picked her running mate?

Kamala Harris chose Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate in the November United States presidential election to face off against Donald Trump.

Walz, aged 60, unexpectedly emerged as a strong contender amidst discussions about other notable figures like Governor Josh Shapiro and Senator Mark Kelly.

In the past week, the Minnesota governor gained significant attention, especially after a widely circulated interview where he criticized certain Republicans as “weird,” a stance later embraced by national Democrats.

Many viewed Walz as a more secure choice for Harris, considering his strong liberal background and the controversies surrounding some other candidates among left-leaning groups.
