Halsey courageously shared a heart-wrenching experience on the SHE MD podcast, revealing she suffered a miscarriage at just 20 years old – and it happened during a concert.
The “Lucky” singer, now 29, opened up to co-hosts Mary Alice Haney and Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi about the traumatic event early in her career.
Halsey recalled the immense pressure she felt with a corporate partner, media entity, and most importantly, a thousand eager fans waiting to see her perform.
Despite the overwhelming circumstances, Halsey bravely took the stage, hiding her pain to deliver a show-stopping performance.
With only 45 minutes of music to perform, Halsey took the stage despite her condition, wearing an adult diaper to manage the bleeding.
“And what ended up happening was I ended up just putting on an adult diaper,” Halsey said. “They’d only asked me to perform, I think, 45 minutes. And I didn’t really have that much music out, to be honest with you, so I don’t know that I could have played longer.”
After the show, she vomited in the parking lot, spent the night in a hotel bathtub, and woke up at dawn to board a flight to Canada.
“I went to a hotel, and I was sick all night. I remember sitting in the bathtub because I just didn’t know what to do with all the blood,” she recalled. “And then waking up at 5 or 6 in the morning to get on another airplane to go to Canada.”
The gruelling experience was compounded by the fact that the concert was filmed, making it difficult for Halsey to watch later.
Halsey recalled feeling isolated, as the only miscarriage stories she’d heard were from married women who had gone on to have successful pregnancies.
“And I just remember feeling like, ‘I don’t know who to talk to about this.’ Because at the time, the only stories about miscarriage that I had heard were from women who were happily married,” she said.
“And most of the time, they would speak about it after they had successfully conceived and carried to term and were like, ‘So this happened before this.’ It was just a world of information that [wasn’t] accessible to me. I just felt so alone.”
Halsey’s courageous sharing sheds light on the often-hidden struggles of miscarriage and the importance of accessible support and resources.
