Canadian-Ghanaian actress Jackie Appiah has achieved a remarkable milestone in African cinema by winning the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 2024 Africa Movie Awards (AMAAs).
The award highlights her outstanding performance in the film “Red Carpet.”
This victory, announced during the AMAA gala in Lagos, Nigeria, on November 2, represents a significant achievement in Appiah’s impressive career and showcases her commitment to her craft over the past two decades.
Despite facing tough competition from other skilled nominees, Appiah’s role in “Red Carpet” truly distinguished her.
The film, directed by Frank Rajah Arase, is a daring production by Samis Media, led by the acclaimed filmmaker and costume designer Samira Yakubu. It boasts an impressive all-star cast, including Kalsoume Sinare, Grace Omaboe, Selly Ghally, Roseline Ngissah, and Adjetey Annag, among others.
Jackie Appiah’s journey with the AMAAs began in 2007 when she won her first award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Beyoncé.”
From that initial success, Appiah swiftly rose to fame, securing her first Best Actress in a Leading Role award in 2010 for “The Perfect Picture.”
Jackie Appiah truly showcased her talent in that unforgettable role, portraying a wife dealing with marital challenges with such depth and nuance.
Her performance was highly praised. She has been consistently recognized over the years, from her role in “Princess Tyra” in 2008 to “Red Carpet” in 2024.
Besides the AMAAs, Appiah’s skills have garnered her various awards, including Best Actress at the 2010 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, the Ghana Movie Awards, and Pan African Actress of the Year at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards in 2011.
For “Red Carpet,” this AMAA win serves as yet another accolade, complementing its nomination for Achievement in Soundtrack, attributed to Bernie Anti’s captivating score.
This recognition at the AMAAs, especially during its 20th Anniversary year, honors Appiah’s significant career and her contributions to African cinema, inspiring both fans and aspiring actors throughout the continent.
