When screenwriter-producer Christy Hall was brought on board as the first hire for the film adaptation of “It Ends With Us”, she knew she faced a significant challenge.
Director Justin Baldoni and author Colleen Hoover, whose 2016 bestseller inspired the movie, tasked her with writing the script.
Hall dove headfirst into the book, absorbing every detail. “I like to fall in love with every word, every moment, and every line,” she shares with The Hollywood Reporter.
This immersive approach allowed her to develop a deep understanding of the story. As she began writing the screenplay, Hall aimed to remain true to the core narrative while strategically determining what elements from the book to retain or omit.
The film adaptation of “It Ends With Us” tells the story of Lily (Blake Lively), a survivor of a traumatic childhood who starts anew.
However, her romance with neurosurgeon Ryle (Justin Baldoni) uncovers disturbing parallels with her parents’ abusive relationship.
The reappearance of Atlas (Brandon Sklenar) from her past further complicates matters, forcing Lily to tap into her inner strength to move forward.
Screenwriter-producer Christy Hall hopes the film will help destigmatize domestic violence and spark crucial conversations around the topic.
“Art should ignite uncomfortable conversations and shed light on society’s darker corners,” Hall says.
“I believe art saves lives, and Colleen Hoover’s book has already done so. I hope the movie continues this legacy.”
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hall discusses the pressure to adapt the book faithfully, her screenplay writing process, and her desire for the film to inspire more stories that address societal needs.
The conversation took place before reports of a rift between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni surfaced.
