I, Robot: Resurgence

A 2004 sci-fi action blockbuster film is unexpectedly making a comeback after 22 years since its original release.

“I, Robot,” directed by Alex Proyas, drew inspiration from the works of renowned science fiction author Isaac Asimov and his best-selling 1950 short story collection of the same name.

Set in 2035 in Chicago, the film follows Detective Del Spooner, portrayed by Will Smith, as he investigates the suspicious death of a leading robotics scientist. Despite his distrust of technology, Spooner begins to suspect that some robots may possess independent thought and emotions, even exhibiting violent tendencies beyond their programming.

Aside from its captivating storyline, “I, Robot” boasted a stellar cast including Bridget Moynahan, Alan Tudyk, James Cromwell, Bruce Greenwood, Chi McBride, and Shia LaBeouf alongside Will Smith.

Decades later, with the advancement of AI and modern technology, the film has regained relevance in today’s society. Recently added to Hulu’s top movies chart, “I, Robot” has resonated with audiences once again.

With a production budget of around $120 million, the sci-fi movie became a commercial success, grossing over $353 million globally. It debuted at No. 1 in North America, overshadowing other blockbusters of the time.

Following its box office triumph, “I, Robot” received multiple award nominations, including a nod for Best Achievement in Visual Effects at the 77th Academy Awards, and a Best Actor nomination for Will Smith at the BET Awards.

The film marked a high point in Will Smith’s career, solidifying his status as Hollywood’s leading man. From his breakout role in “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” to acclaimed performances in dramatic films like “Ali” and “The Pursuit of Happyness,” Smith’s versatility and box office success were on full display in the 2000s, with “I, Robot” adding to his list of blockbuster hits.
