How SZA Transitioned from Gymnastics to Music

American singer SZA, known as one of music’s prominent stars, recently displayed her talents beyond the music industry.

In a video posted on Instagram before the 2024 Paris Olympics, she joined U.S. gymnast Simone Biles at the gym, showcasing her own gymnastic abilities.

The video captured their heartfelt embrace, with SZA expressing her long-held dream of meeting Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history.

Additionally, the “Kill Bill” artist reminisced about her earlier involvement in gymnastics before transitioning to a career in music.

“When it was clear to me that I wasn’t gonna be a national gymnast, I was like, ‘Okay, let me see what I can do.’ I needed something to be competitive at,” she said.

The R&B artist shared a little about her history with gymnastics. “I was nowhere near as cool as you” she told Biles.

Even though SZA may never have brought her skills to an Olympic level, her 13-year tenure in gymnastics did not come without its accolades.

According to a 2013 interview with Complex, the Grammy-winning artist became fifth in the nation as a gymnast when she was only a sophomore in high school.

Although it’s been some time since the “Nobody Gets Me” singer competed officially, she recently proved her skills by engaging in a friendly handstand competition with an Olympic gold-winning gymnastics champion.

Surpassing Biles in the contest, SZA impressively maintained her balance, which made Biles to applaud her, saying, “That was so good!”

She also posted a video on her Instagram Stories of her and Biles backflipping into a foam pit, after which SZA said, “That was fun as shit.”
