Grimes has disclosed her recent diagnoses of ADHD and autism.
On March 22nd, the 37-year-old musician shared her experience on X, responding to a meme about childhood reading habits and their potential link to ADHD.
While acknowledging her diagnoses, she expressed concern about the prevalence of potentially misleading mental health content online.
“I have to say, there’s this subculture of ‘mental health’ accounts that I think are, like, extreme info-hazards,” Grimes wrote.
“I got diagnosed with ADHD/autism this year and realized I’m probably dyslexic, which is why I can’t spell at all without spellcheck.”
She reflected on how earlier diagnoses might have altered her life, stating, “I feel, like, had we known this when I was a child, I would have worked so much less hard, been on drugs, and so many of the weird obsessions and motivations I had would have been seen as pathological and I could have written off certain things that were very hard for me but I’m glad I overcame them.”
Grimes also shared her belief that some mental health symptoms can be influenced by external factors, citing her experience with learning about mental illnesses in school and the potential impact of screen addiction.
“Also, I feel a huge percentage of ADHD is screen addiction and dopaminergic burn-out,” she wrote. “My ADHD symptoms were infinitely worse when I wasn’t an avid reader.”
She expressed concern about online content that might discourage beneficial activities like reading.
In a subsequent post, Grimes (Claire Elise Boucher) explained her motivation for addressing what she perceives as misinformation.
Grimes, who studied neuroscience and Russian at McGill University, is the mother of three children with Elon Musk: X Æ A-Xii, Techno Mechanicus, and Exa Dark Sideræl.
