Just hours after announcing her 2026 run for Congress, former U.S. Rep. Mayra Flores was hospitalized due to a sudden health issue, her campaign confirmed.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, April 15, her team shared the news: “During this challenging time, we humbly ask for your prayers and support.
“We pray that Mayra will return stronger than ever, ready to continue her commitment to serving our country.”
Later that evening, the campaign gave an encouraging update, saying Flores is now recovering well.
“Earlier today, Mayra Flores faced a sudden health scare, but thanks to the incredible care she received and the support of her loved ones, she is now fully recovering and feeling stronger than ever,” the post read.
“She’s taking time to rest, but her dedication to TX-28 remains strong. She’ll be back on the campaign trail soon—stronger than ever.”
Flores, 39, made history in 2022 when she became the first Mexican-born woman to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives after winning a special election for Texas’ 34th district. She lost in the general election later that year and ran again in 2024 but was unsuccessful.
Earlier Tuesday, before her health scare, Flores had officially launched her campaign for Texas’ 28th district, where she hopes to unseat Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar, who has held the seat since 2005.
