Former College Hockey Player Ian Cleary Sentenced to Prison for Sexual Assault against Female Student

A former college hockey player was sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting a female student in Pennsylvania after messaging her on Facebook years later confessing to the assault.

Ian Cleary, 32, assaulted Shannon Keeler in her dorm room after behaving inappropriately towards her at a party. Keeler reported the assault in 2013, but no action was taken until Cleary messaged her in 2019 admitting to the crime. After a reevaluation of the case, Cleary was extradited from France in 2024 and pled guilty to second-degree sexual assault in 2025.

Keeler expressed disappointment in the system for not taking her accusations seriously earlier, but was relieved to see Cleary held accountable.

The impact of the assault on her life and her family continues, despite the passage of time. This case highlights the importance of believing victims and seeking justice, even if it takes years to achieve.
