The fate of Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has been decided after a recent effort to remove him from office. This development comes amidst the ongoing search for Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, who was abducted in Tucson, Arizona. Nanos has been actively involved in leading the investigation into her disappearance.
Following a meeting on May 12th, the Pima County Board of Supervisors ultimately decided not to take any action against Nanos. During the meeting, various concerns were raised regarding Nanos’ work history, management of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, as well as financial and personnel decisions. Supervisor Steve Christy made a motion to vacate Nanos from his position, but the motion failed to receive a second, resulting in a different motion passing 4-0 (with Christy abstaining) to not take any action against him.
Leadership within the sheriff’s department was emphasized as crucial by Jennifer Allen, a Pima County Board of Supervisors chair, highlighting the importance of a cohesive and supportive team. Despite the challenges, Nanos expressed his commitment to addressing internal issues within the organization to work more effectively towards solving problems.
One of the board’s concerns revolved around an incident where Nanos allegedly lied during a deposition for an unrelated lawsuit. Records obtained by CBS News indicated that Nanos had been suspended multiple times during his tenure as an officer in El Paso, Texas, prior to his role in the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
The decision regarding Nanos’ position as sheriff is unrelated to the ongoing search for Nancy Guthrie, who has been missing for over 100 days. Recently, FBI Director Kash Patel criticized the handling of the investigation by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, noting delays in allowing FBI involvement.
Despite efforts by Savannah Guthrie to offer a reward and the release of video footage and images related to the case, the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance has not yet identified any suspects.
In a twist related to the case, journalist Brian Entin addressed new developments, bringing further attention to the ongoing search for Nancy Guthrie.
