The Nigerian women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, were celebrated for their victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship, receiving a warm welcome at the State House in Abuja. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced rewards, including cash gifts and housing for the players and staff in recognition of their fifth consecutive continental title.
Each player will be awarded $100,000 along with a three-bedroom flat at the Renewed Hope Estate. The coaching and technical crew will also receive cash rewards and housing benefits. The entire team has been honoured with the title of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
At a reception held at the State House Banquet Hall, Vice President Kashim Shettima praised the team’s dedication and spirit in representing Nigeria. The event was attended by prominent figures, including the First Lady, the Vice President’s wife, and Chief of Staff to the President.
D’Tigress secured their victory with a 78-64 win over Mali, continuing their unbeaten streak in the tournament. Coach Rena Wakama was highlighted for her leadership, while players like Amy Okonkwo and Ezinne Kalu were acknowledged for their outstanding performances.
The ceremony honoring D’Tigress followed a similar event for the Super Falcons, showing the government’s commitment to supporting and recognizing the achievements of women in sports. Vice President Shettima emphasized the role of sports in development, stating that it is more than just entertainment but also a tool for education and economic growth.
