Drew Barrymore threw a surprise for Wicked star Ariana Grande by loaning her the original Glinda wand from the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz.
Grande, who plays Glinda in the upcoming Wicked film, was so emotional when Barrymore unveiled the historical artifact, which was previously owned by the Smithsonian and is now in private hands.
During the surprise, Barrymore enthusiastically introduced the wand to the astonished pop star.
“I have something that’s extremely exciting and special,” Barrymore said. “It’s actually been owned by the Smithsonian and is now in private hands.
But for our conversation, they loaned it to us.””Bring out the original Glinda wand, please,” Barrymore directed her crew as Grande sat in stunned disbelief.
“Are you serious right now?” Grande asked, before pretending to run off the set with the wand, saying, “Thank you guys it’s been fun. Yeah, I’m kidding. I’m kidding.”
Barrymore said that the pink-clad Grande seemed like a perfect fit for the piece of film history. “You look so perfect with it,” Barrymore told her.
“How did you even pull this off?” Grande exclaimed in disbelief.
Barrymore explained that once they learned Grande would be a guest, the entire crew and production team came together to secure the original wand as a special surprise for both Grande and the audience.
Unfortunately, Grande couldn’t keep the wand, as it was on loan from its owners.
The pop star has a long-standing connection with the character of Glinda, having first fallen in love with the show as a child when her mom took her to see the original cast on Broadway.
Grande and the original Broadway Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth, have shared a close bond for years.
