Don Henley: The Story Behind “Dirty Laundry”

#1 hits on the charts are impressive, but hitting #1 before a song is even officially released is a rare feat. Don Henley achieved this with his solo hit “Dirty Laundry.”

Before “Dirty Laundry” became the second single from Henley’s debut solo album, it reached #1 on the Billboard Top Album Tracks chart in October 1982. As reported by GQ, the song garnered attention and was released as a single due to two independent promo men urging Asylum Records to promote it.

Henley revealed in a 1991 interview that “Dirty Laundry” was inspired by the challenging period he faced after the breakup of the Eagles. He shared, “For a while, I was pacing a lot in the house and I was drinking a lot. That was a really rough time for me.”

In addition to his personal struggles, Henley faced further controversy when a 16-year-old sex worker overdosed at his home in 1980. Despite his efforts to seek help for her, Henley was arrested for possession of drugs found in his home. This experience later fueled the lyrics of “Dirty Laundry.”

Featuring scorching guitar solos from Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh and Toto’s Steve Lukather, “Dirty Laundry” captured the media’s exploitation of scandals effectively. The catchy chorus reflected the public’s fascination with sensationalized news stories.

Henley, a self-professed news junkie, criticized the media’s role in stripping people of their dignity. He was particularly disheartened by the sensationalized coverage of celebrity deaths and tragedies, prompting him to write “Dirty Laundry” as a scathing critique.

Despite its initial controversy, “Dirty Laundry” peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming one of Henley’s most successful solo hits. The song’s message resonated with many listeners who were tired of the media’s exploitative tactics.

In a world filled with sensationalism and scandal, “Dirty Laundry” remains a powerful reminder of the dangers of media manipulation. Henley’s sharp lyrics and energetic guitar solos serve as a timeless critique of the media’s relentless pursuit of salacious stories.
